Ensign Irvin Laumer was the only surviving officer when S-19 was discovered aground on Talaud Island.
Matthew Reddy promoted Laumer to lieutenant and sent him to either recover or salvage the S-19. Laumer succeeded, but the submarine was nearly sunk when the island's volcano blew its top, the resulting tidal wave forcing Laumer to submerge the boat. The boat survived but was damaged sufficiently to prevent it from ever being used as a submarine again. Laumer subsequently rescued Dennis Silva, Princess Rebecca Anne McDonald, Lawrence, and several others when their boat was found drifting at sea.
Rebuilding the S-19 as a torpedo boat, Laumer commanded it during the Battle of Madras. It managed to sink several Grik ships but was run over and sunk by a Grik battleship. Laumer managed to escape with only a small number of the crew.
During the battle to take the Grik capital city on Madagascar, Laumer volunteered to lead a small strike force consisting of Dennis Silva, Gunny Arnold Horn, Pam Cross, Lawrence, Isak Reuben, and several others, to infiltrate the Celestial Mother's palace and either take her prisoner or kill her. Unfortunately, most of the squad is either killed or disabled in the fighting, and Laumer enters the "throne room" with only Lawrence and Isak Reuben with him. They are attacked by the Celestial Mother's bodyguards. Laumer manages to kill one of them, but the other one impales him with a spear through the back. Isak and Lawrence manage to complete the mission, though.
