Sean Bates, also known as Sean O'Casey, was aboard the vessel carrying Rebecca Anne McDonald when it struck a leviathan. He was instrumental in saving Rebecca's life. They eventually ended up on Talaud Island with the S-19. Everyone on the island was rescued by Matthew Reddy and Walker. O'Casey admitted to Reddy that he was in conflict with the Empire of New Britain Isles.
In Distant Thunders, O'Casey remained aboard Donaghey while Reddy, Rebecca and others visited the Empire frigate Achilles.
